Abstract

A detailed analysis of the dialogue Sophist shows that the distinction between philosopher and sophist sketched there by Plato is possible by tracing a distinction between dialogue and argument, in which the difference between the recourse to appeararice and the demand of objectivity plays an important role. This distinction, on the other hand, is supported by some main ideas of later Plato's ontology.
