Abstract

Since the Spanish Conquest and colonization of America, slavery has become an issue with an enormous political but also philosophical impact. In this essay, I am concerned mainly with discussions that raisedrose after the famous Dispute of Valladolid between Sepulveda and Las Casas (1550), looking into some prominent theories about free will and their influence on the issue of ownership (dominium), as well as its relationship with slavery. The conclusion is that none of the authors examined here, in spite of having established a strong concept of human free will, dares to criticize slavery as such.
