Abstract

The proper intellectual activity of metaphysics is not “to conceive without matter” its objects (God and separate entities), but "to judge that its objects do not have matter". This judgment is called separatio. A succession of separationes constitutes the so-called viaremotionis. The author analyzes the influence of Pseudo-Dionysius in Aquinas's thought in this particular point. Finally, it is stated that coming to know the excellence of divinity implies a core of negativity.
