Abstract

Is it morally reproachable to endorse or adopt religious beliefs? Guided by Augustine, Aristotle, William James, Ortega y Gasset, Wittgenstein and Austin, the author aims to show in this article the difficulties that arise when coherently articulating the reason why we can adopt or endorse religious beliefs without moral reproaches. Moreover, he shows the insufficiencies of the pragmatic defense of Augustine in De utilitate credendi, opting instead for the reconsideration of the Wittgensteinian texts to clarify the problem.
