About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Tópicos, Revista de Filosofía is an academic publication aimed at professionals within the national and international philosophical community.  It has appeared uninterruptedly since 1991 thanks to the support and financial aid of Universidad Panamericana’s School of Philosophy.  We accept unsolicited, unpublished, original manuscripts in Spanish, English, French, Italian, German, and Portuguese.  The contents and methodology of all articles must be predominantly philosophical.  The journal is not limited to a specific area of field within philosophy, so long as there is rigor and methodological sophistication in the research done and in the mode of exposition.  We do not publish manuscripts that are non-academic, general, or theological, nor do we publish survey articles, articles focusing on art or literary criticism, or interdisciplinary studies that are not carried out with a predominantly philosophical methodology and content.  Each article shall be submitted to a rigorous peer review process, following the double-blind method of evaluation.

Peer Review Process

a) Section Policies:

  1. Monographic articles.  These are articles on any theme or area of philosophy.  Their contents and methodology must be predominantly philosophical and must be between 3,000 and 14,000 words in length.  The method of evaluation will be double blind, i.e., the author and referees will remain anonymous.
  2. Discussions.  These are responses or objections to articles, notes, or discussions that have been previously published in Tópicos: Revista de Filosofía.  This is a polemical section with entries written in the style proper to a scientific publication.  Discussions must be between 2,500 and 4,500 words in length.  The method of evaluation will be double blind, i.e., the author and referees will remain anonymous.
  3. Philosophy within the Public Sphere.  These are articles that deal with an issue relevant to the public sphere.  Tópicos: Revista de Filosofía does not accept essays or articles in which methodology and discussion are not predominantly philosophical.  They will be of no fewer than 3,000 words and no more than 14,000 words.  The method of evaluation will be double blind, i.e., the author and referees will remain anonymous.  If the subject requires it, we will resort to referees from other disciplines.
  4. Critical book reviews.  These are notes on philosophical publications and must be between 900 and 2,500 words in length.  The method of evaluation will be double blind, i.e., the author and referees will remain anonymous.

b) Peer Review Process:

Each manuscript received will be evaluated by two scholars with the highest degrees who are experts in the field of the article being evaluated.  The name of the author as well as that of the referees will remain anonymous.  The average response time for articles is three to four months.  Regardless of the results, the author will receive in writing the referees’ feedback.  If it is deemed publishable with suggestions, the author will have the freedom of deciding whether or not to incorporate the recommendations.  If it is deemed publishable with necessary revisions, the publication of the article will be contingent upon the specified changes being made.  If it receives a negative evaluation, it shall not be published.  It is sufficient for one of the referees to give a negative evaluation for the manuscript not to be published.

Code of Ethics

As required by professional ethics and best practices for research, collaborators are expected fully to adhere to the following guidelines for submitting any article or book review.

  1. The work must be unpublished; works that have been sent to other journals or are being reviewed elsewhere will not be accepted.
  2. The work must explicitly include bibliographical references related to the actual sources from which the information has been collected, including all relevant bibliographical data and add, when possible, the DOI number. In case of using unpublished material, the contributor must possess the explicit permission of the author(s) of the work in question for its partial or total use or reproduction.
  3. If fragments of the work have been previously published as seminar memories, previous versions in other papers, as introductions or book chapters, etc., the sources of such material must to be provided, while this situation must also be explicitly stated in the work.
  4. In the case of co-authored works, all authors must agree with all the statements here made, and they must chose among them one author that will serve as contact with the journal.
  5. The work should incorporate all the relevant acknowledgments, including institutions and organizations that financed the research or provided any kind of grant, as well as departments and work groups that might have participated either directly or indirectly in the shaping of the work, etc.
  6. The author or authors of the work may not have any commercial, financial or particular link of any sort with persons or institutions that could hold any interest related to the work at hand; in other words, conflicting interests must be avoided.
  7. The work must be original; works that are totally or partially composed of reproductions/translations of other works or any other instances that could be considered as plagiarism will not be accepted.  All articles will be scanned with an anti-plagiarism software.
  8. The author or authors of the manuscript must be aware of, and agree to, the fact that the publication of the manuscript implies the transfer or rights (copyright) to Universidad Panamericana, which reserves the right to distribute online the published version of the article or review according to current laws.
  9. Moreover, Tópicos: Revista de Filosofía adheres to the norms established by the Committee on Publication Ethics COPE.
