Abstract

The personalism and spiritualism of Augustine of Hippo constitute one of the most important intellectual influences on Joseph Ratzinger, at the same time as he sought to maintain a dialogue with the ethical and metaphysical thought underlying Christianity. This absence of the personal dimension constituted a difficulty—at least theoretically—in harmonizing with Thomistic and scholastic thought. Personalism thus constitutes one of the presuppositions of Ratzinger’s thought, as we will see in these pages..
