Abstract
In this article, I discuss the problem concerning the nature and scope of Leibniz’s nominalism. Considering several manuscripts from Leibniz’s youth to his later years, I provide textual evidence refuting the interpretation according to which he could be considered a nominalist. In contrast, following certain Leibniz’s scholars, I suggest that Leibniz’s ontology can be better understood as conceptualist. Thus, the main claim of this article is that even if—against Scholastics—Leibniz calls for the elimination or avoidance of abstract or universal terms in philosophical language, given some specific requirements of his ontology, he was pushed to reestablish them.
