Abstract

This article examines the origin and function of the concept of “negative pleasure” in Kant’s “Analytic of the Sublime”. To this end, it analyzes its first formulation in the Attempt to Introduce the Concept of Negative Magnitudes into Philosophy and shows the novelty that this text introduces into the investigation of negative feelings. It also sets out the reasons why Mendelssohn rejects the use of negative magnitudes to provide a psychological explanation of such feelings. Based on the meaning that Kant assigns to “negative pleasure” in that essay, it is argued that one of the reasons why he relegates the “Analytic of the Sublime” to a “mere appendix” of the Critique of Judgment is that the displeasure occasioned by the experience of sublime nature lacks its own transcendental grounding.
