Abstract
In this article, we address how Leibniz understood, between 1681 and 1686, the mechanical processes underlying the phenomenon of sound, that is, the generation, propagation, and expression of sound in the hearing organ. We elucidate briefly, first, what Leibniz meant by a “mechanical” explanation. In this context, we also analyze in what sense it is possible to give mechanical explanations regarding sound, given that, in Leibniz’s terminology, it is a “confused” quality. Subsequently, we consider in detail what the mechanical explanation of the generation, propagation, and expression of sound consists of. The focus of our approach is the Leibnizian explanation of the immediate or “proximate” cause of sound.
