The Logic of Gift in Business and Economics: A Systematic Literature Review
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: To identify the main themes, contributors, and theoretical perspectives on the logic of gift in business, management, finance, and economics (BMFE); map relevant BMFE practices; and discuss findings and gaps to inform a future research agenda. Methodology: A systematic literature review was conducted focusing on gift theory, gift-giving, and the gift economy. The final sample comprises 143 articles and book chapters indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection, published between 1997 and 2025. Results: Five main themes emerged in the literature: (1) Digital and gift economies; (2) Gift-giving in consumption and productive practices; (3) Differences between gift-giving, bribery, and guanxi; (4) Moral principles and integrative approaches of gift-giving; and (5) The relationality of giving and receiving in organizations. Discussion: Moving beyond instrumental views of human relationships and their impact on decision-making, we discuss an ethical background for gift-giving to respond to the mapped digital, cultural, and contextual challenges. This includes exploring different motivations, exchange types, and the nuances between gratuity and self-interest. Conclusion: The logic of gift provides a crucial anthropological framework for understanding alternative forms of economics and management. We close by proposing a comprehensive agenda for future research to further integrate relationality into BMFE. Limitations: The sample was restricted to WoS-indexed journals and chapters, omitting books and grey literature.
